FAM President Walter Nyamilandu : Seeking fourth term

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has been blamed for abusing grants the association has been receiving from the world football governing body Fifa. [caption id="attachment_57040" align="alignright" width="600"]FAM President Walter Nyamilandu : Seeking fourth term FAM President Walter Nyamilandu : Seeking fourth term[/caption] According to a document from the world governing body’s auditor AMG Global, the association received a total of US$ 1050,000 in grants meant for various programmes and projects. But this is while the association has been nagging the government to offer funding for the national team engagements. Among the beneficiary programmes sanctioned by Fifa are US$10,000, men’s competitions US$300,000 (K150 million), women’s competitions US$112,500 around (K27 million), technical development US15,500, refereeing US20,000, Futsal and Beach Soccer US10,000, planning and administration US282,000,  Infrastructure US$300,000. The sources said the money would have been enough to meet some of the financial needs the association wants. “With all this, FAM still take its begging bowl to Malawi government. It also gets money from national team games, cup games gate collections shares,” said a concerned soccer fan. The expenses on women’s football is far much less that than what FIfa recommends by giving out grants. FAM has for the past two years failed to hold Presidential Cup which was initially pegged at K60 million as the money was diverted towards the national team. This year Malawi National Council of Sports has directed to the association to hold the competition but it might not involve the elite league teams. In 2014 the football association also pocketed a total of US$$500,000 from the some projects of which US$250,000 was a bonus that Fifa offered to the association for the South Africa World Cup proceeds. The association is intending to buy a bus despite the fact the South Africa offered a bus that was used during the 2010 World Cup as a token of appreciation for the countries in the region who contributed to the success of Africa’s first ever greatest football fiesta. In 2013 it received US$250,000 and 2012 it got also US$250,000 and in 2011 it pocketed US$550,000

Kamuzu Institute for Sports

Irate athletes who were training at Kamuzu Institute for Youth in Lilongwe on Tuesday chased away students from Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) as misunderstandings over the place deepens. [caption id="attachment_67732" align="alignright" width="500"]Kamuzu Institute for Sports Kamuzu Institute for Sports[/caption] One athlete told Nyasa Times that the students arrived at the sports facility around 10am for inspection but kept on disturbing athletes who were doing both indoor and outdoor training. This annoyed the athletes who chased away the unsuspecting students and they never returned. This is just a symptom of huge misunderstanding between Malawi Sports Council and Ministry of Youth and Sports following government decision to take away the sports facility from the sports council to the sports ministry. Ministry of Youth and Sports Council spokesperson Christopher Ngukwa confirmed the incident. "Luanar wants to use two of the many rooms at the institute. Others will continue using the other rooms for their indoor and outdoor sports activities. We will make a well laid down program on how to use the facility," said Ngukwa. Luanar officials could not be reached for comment on how they intend the rooms at the institute as classes with noise coming from training athletes. But minister of Youth and Sports Grace Chiumia hinted earlier that the athletes will now be allowed to use the facility on weekends only. The institute was constructed during the reign of first head of state Kamuzu Banda for both indoor and outdoor sports activities and was mainly used by the former paramilitary wing of the Malawi Congress Party, the infamous Malawi Young Pioneers which was forcibly disarmed by the Malawi Army soldiers who also torched and damaged the institute as it was regarded as a mini base of the MYP.

Nyirenda: In rare admission on juju

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda has admitted to have solicited and used juju in football match against Democratic Republic of Congo some years ago. [caption id="attachment_90144" align="alignright" width="600"]Nyirenda: In rare admission on juju Nyirenda: In rare admission on juju[/caption] "This was regrettable. Malawi won the game yes but we could not have done that. This was the time I did not know Jesus, I was not spiritual," said Nyirenda in a programme monitored on MBC radio one. He said he was prompted to travel to Mulanje and spend a night in the famous charm district because DR Congo team brought their herbalists. This is a rare admission on juju by a senior official at the football association. Nyirenda also urged football players to complete their education as football career is always short. "If FAM had its own national players, I could have done all what it takes so that they get first degrees, unfortunately these players are owned by clubs. It is always good to see players holding senior positions in companies. They should not rely on football alone because it is short-lived," he said. Nyirenda said his role model is his boss, Walter Nyamilandu saying he has excelled in life marvellously. Nyamilandu who is a senior manager at Illovo Sugar is seeking a fourth term as president of FAM at the December 12 elections. He faces prominent marketer Wilkins Mijiga in a two horse race.

Nyamilandu: FAM 'open terms' president

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has hired pollster, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to ensure free, fair and credible presidential elections on December 12 in Salima. [caption id="attachment_96421" align="alignright" width="556"]Nyamilandu: FAM 'open terms' president Nyamilandu: FAM 'open terms' president[/caption] FAM chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda assured football lovers that the election, between incumbent Walter Nyamilandu and Sulom backed and banker Wilkins Mijiga will be credible. "The election will be through a secret ballot and we will need the expertise of MEC. MEC officials will man the polling booths," said Nyirenda. In addition, Nyirenda said, FAM has invited international monitors to ensure transparency and accountability in the closely contested presidential elections. "We will have two people from SAFA to be led by its legal manager. They have confirmed coming. We will also have representatives from Cosafa;" said Nyirenda. He said in addition, FAM has invited FA presidents from neighbouring countries. Nyirenda said this shows how committed FAM is to ensure free, fair and credible election. Nyamilandu has already served three terms and his decision to run for the fourth term has divided the football body just as it has divided football fanatics. Football has more following in Malawi than any other sport.

Lungu said: "It means... when you work so hard and you are champions, you feel you got what you deserve. That is good feeling.” He added: “For me, maybe a special feeling because we have won the title with some games to go. "I could choose another club to start my coaching career where it's easier to handle, but I chose the biggest club in Malawi with a lot of pressure and demand for trophies and that’s Bullets. A club where I was happy before and won many trophies. I'm so happy to win the league with Bullets now as their coach,” said Lungu. Lungu added: "I must salute my players for their hard spirit in all the games we have played. Losing only one game is not a joke, and l must say let us celebrate because we have achieved what we wanted this season. "To win the title before finishing your games against the best teams like Wanderers, Silver are a big achievement,” said Lungu. Lungu said the midweek game with Tigers “was not a game to enjoy. It was a game to finish the job.” He said:"Tigers gave us a counter-attacking game. We coped with that. We scored four goals, changed the team in the second half, and controlled possession, the destiny of the game. “We did everything the team needs to do. That's why we're champions. That's why we deserve it. Everybody knows that." The People's Team went into the clash needing only a single point to take the crown and duly delivered with a 2-1 victory to kick start their celebrations. Jafali Chande was the hero of the afternoon after he beautifully notched in both goals in the second half through headers. Tigers however looked a fierce side particularly in the first 15 minutes of the match and their excellent start earned them their first and only goal of the match in as early as eight minutes into the match through Brighton Munthali. But Bullets knowing that they needed to come out with a point at all cost to seal their title defence, did all they could to bring back the game into life and later managed to equalise and score the winning goal in the second half. Tigers who have so far played nine games without a win in the second round made a number of substitutions in search of an equaliser but to no avail. Their counterparts also made changes to cement their defence and to ensure they dont give out the lead which they suceeded until the referee blew the final whistle. It was all jubilation and ululation from Bullets supporters, players, technical panel and executive members after the final whistle.--Additional reporting by Elijah Phimbi, Nyasa Times

[caption id="attachment_98194" align="alignright" width="267"]Jack Chamangwana: Returns to Nomads Jack Chamangwana: Returns to Nomads[/caption]   [caption id="attachment_86263" align="alignright" width="600"]Osman: Busy Osman: Busy[/caption] Wanderers vice general secretary Chris Kananji said Chamangwana, whose young brother George is the chairman of the club, has been roped in to help the technical panel to the end of the season as the team is struggling to find convincing results. Kananji said the decision to take Chamangwana on board was reached at after the exercise meeting in Blantyre Monday evening to review the team’s recent poor performance. According to Kananji, Osman has excused himself three months ago as he said he is busy with personal businesses in Mangochi. Nyasa Times also understands that the committee has issued a stern warning to Team Managers Chiyembekezo Zidane and his deputy Steve Madeira to get to serious business or face the chop if the discipline of some players doesn't change which they said is contributing to the team's inconsistent performances. Wanderers have played 23 games in TNM Super League managed to win only 1 game in second round with average of 2 goals scored so far . Chamangwana player for Wanderers in his early days before he played his professional football in South Africa where he captained Kaizer Chiefs before he coached Yanga FC in Tanzania and was also Flames Technical Director before he was appointed as assistant coach of Flames to Young Chimodzi and he is considered as one of the best players for Malawi.

Lunda given support

Malawi national football team, the Flames, donated K38,000 to former Big Bullets and international custodian Trust Lunda, who recently underwent surgery at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe where he had his toe amputated. [caption id="attachment_98216" align="alignright" width="191"]Lunda given support Lunda given support[/caption] Lunda, who was discharged and now is back in Dwangwa left Bullets for South Africa in 2011, before coming back home this year. Flames team manager Clement Kafwafwa confirmed the news with Nyasa Times before the team’s departure for Ethiopia, where they will take part in the Cecafa Cup. Kafwafwa said they thought it wise to render support to a fellow colleague, who once played for the Flames. He also said Lunda contributed a lot to the success of the Flames in his time, therefore, they decided to offer a little help they could afford “We thought it wise to help our friend with a little something after the technical panel led by Technical Director John Kaputa and players. We could have loved to go as a team to give him the money on our own but since the team is leaving around 3 for Ethiopia we have given the money to Blue Eagles team manager to handle over the money on our behalf,” said Kafwafwa. The former Flames towering defender also urged companies to come to Lunda’s rescue as he needs support at this critical time. Since he came from the rainbow nation, Lunda has been in the hospital for three weeks, and Bullets officials and players also spared some time to visit him when the team was in Lilongwe to play Epac FC. The Peoples Team bought him several groceries and they also gave him money. In his remarks on a telephone interview, Lunda said he was happy that his colleagues for the Flames remembered him. “ I didn’t expect them to remember me because it has been long since I played for the Flames . I hope that they will do the same for other former players,” he said. Many soccer lovers in this country remember Lunda for his reflex skills.

Mijiga: FAM presidential aspirant

Top marketer Wilkins Mijiga is aspiring to take over the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) presidency during the December 12 elections. He was nominated by Super League of Malawi (SULOM) to challenge incumbent Walter Nyailandu who is seeking a fourth term. Nyasa Times engaged Mijiga for an exclusive interview. [caption id="attachment_98256" align="alignright" width="600"]Mijiga: FAM presidential aspirant Mijiga: FAM presidential aspirant[/caption] Excerpts: Mr. Wilkins George Mijiga, you are vying for the Presidency of FAM, Tell us who you are and your track record? I am a 1993 Graduate of Economics and Sociology from Chancellor College, University of Malawi and a Post Graduate scholar in Leadership with the University of Cape Town, has been a consummate and passionate driver, campaigner, innovator, architect, pioneer, veteran, manager and Administrator of a lot of football initiatives and campaigns in Malawi at all levels from secondary, university, community to National level. I was born on April 6th, 1971, and currently work as Head of Strategy, Marketing and Corporate Affairs for National Bank of Malawi. I am also a Board Member of Airport Development Limited (ADL) since 2014 and I also co-own one of Blantyre’s elite, most prestigious and up market pub called HS Winehouse. Most people know you as a banker and a marketer or a corporate leadership scholar. What football administrative credentials do you have to run for such office? I have a very rich track record in football involvement not only as a player, which almost every Malawian boy does at one time or another , but in football management and it started from my high school days and runs as follows;: From 1987 to 1989 I was Team Manager, Malosa Secondary School Football Team Where I was instrumental in facilitating the day to day coordination and operations of the Malosa Secondary School Football Team during its participation in the then Famous MBS Trophy. Some of the prominent members of that team included Lennox Thipa who went to play for Admarc Tigers, Austin Mandiwa who is currently in the USA, late Paul Kankodo who went on to play for UFC, Zonena Zimphonje, Wilson Nanungu, a Physiotherapist with QECH. Todate they still call me “athimu”; colloquial Chichewa for Team Manager. From 1992 to 1993 I was Team Manager, Chilunga (Chancellor College ) Football Club This was another two years of being the operative and administrative champion for the coordination and facilitation of the logistical requirements to run Chanco Football Club that was playing in the Blantyre and District Football League division two . Most of the players in the Chanco team graduated their way up into the UFC (University Football Club) of those days that was playing in the Premier League, the most prestigious league at time From 2000 to 2001 I was Manager and Champion of the Carlsberg Cup I championed the launch of the first ever Carlsberg Cup in 2000 as Brand Manager for Carlsberg Malawi. As the Carlsberg brand champion, I took the lead in the conceptualization, packaging and bringing into being the Carlsberg Cup and its subsequent holly razzmatazz of execution that made the Carlsberg Cup of 2000 achieve Pop Star status with its novel execution of bringing military aircrafts to spice the cup final including using of beauty pageants to bring the cup making it become more than a cup final but a massive exciting football pageantry. In 2005 I was Vice Chairperson and Coordinator of the FAM CUP On January 5th 2005 on the request and approach by the President of the Football Association of Malawi to help the Association deal with the draught of Cups and Tournaments sponsorship in Malawi at his taking office, I used my rich social capital and professional and social networks to coordinated a caucus of professionals and business executives that formed the FAM CUP Campaign chaired at that time by the Vice President the Right Honourable Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima. As Vice Chairperson I was in charge of the operational and logistical coordination of the day to day administrative and routine operations of the FAM Cup Campaign. The Committee conceptualized and launched the FAM CUP initiative, conducted a self-help funds mobilization for the Cup and ran the organisation of the matches in the competition and the attendant logistics of running a Football Cup Competition including the format of fixtures and then the execution and staging of the Finals having secured aK6 million once of sponsorship from Press Trust. Having successfully ran this campaign and given birth to the FAM Cup, Standard Bank came to take it over and rechristened the Cup to Standard Bank Cup. In 2008 I was Pioneer and Founding member, BEACH SOCCER I worked as a founder and pioneer member of the first ever Beach soccer tournament that happened in Sunbird Livingstonia Beach in Salima. As a key member of the team I was key in driving the conceptualization of the trophy, the venue booking and scheduling of the event. Most critically I championed the resource mobilization to run the launch by securing sponsorship of K0.5 million from National Bank of Malawi. I was also one of the few members of the team that attended 10 of the meetings running up to and during the launch of the Beach Soccer in Malawi. Since 2003           Member of the Big Bullets Board of Trustees From 2008 to 2012 I was Board Member, National Council of Sports From 2009 to 2010 I was Chairperson, FLAMES 2010 Resource Mobilization Campaign My highest achievements and contribution to football to date came in 2009 when I appointed by the Malawi Government, under the recommendation of FAM and National Council of sports to Chair a special Task Force to mobilize resources from the corporate world, the private sectors and the Malawian public with the purpose of applying those resources and make them available to be used by the Malawi National Football Team, the FLAMES to participate in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola. I led the task force which included prominent members such as Peterkins Kayira, Mrs. Wilma Chalulu, Mr. Darlington Ndasauka, Mrs. Stella Hara and many others; to go on the highway conducting fund raising initiative including big walks, SMS (short message service) Promotions, Music shows, dinner and dances and seeking pledges of support. These efforts culminated in engaging the help of the Chief Executive Officer of Press Corporation , Professor Matthews Chikaonda who helped mobilize business captains to pledge in excess of K22 million that was paid over to FAM on January 7th 2015 and enabled the FLAMEs effectively at the 2010 AFCON in Angola It seems you have been deeply involved with football, how about FAM, have you been directly involved with their Activities? Of course most deeply involved. The FAM Cup initiative as well as the 20110 FLAMES Resource Mobilization were direct activities benefiting not only the people of Malawi but FAM in particular. I have also been engaged by FAM at various levels on other key assignments like in 2012 to 2013 when I was Member of the FAM Commercialization and Marketing Team In this assignment I worked as a lead and member of the Commercialization and Marketing Initiative to make FAM a fully-fledged-self-financing and financially vibrant and independent Association that generate adequate financial resources through innovation and initiatives to be commercially viable. This initiative culminated in the launch of the first ever FLAMES Replica Jerseys deal with PUMA and the subsequent launch of the PUMA Replica Jerseys and its marketing and vending. What other key initiative have you been involved with in the Football arena? In 2014  I Chaired the Resource Mobilization campaign for KEEP BLANTYRE CLEAN and GREEN and the Blantyre MAYOR’s CHARITY SHIELD I worked as part of the team that championed the launch of the Mayor’s Charity Shield in 2014 in the month of November following on to the Mayors Ball that happened on November 1, 2014 under the Chairmanship of Mr. Khwesi Msusa. As Chair I was part of the key personalities that led the team in the conceptualization of the tournament, liaison with stakeholders including the participating teams and all the logistics and administrative tasks of managing the Tournament end to end. And the Shield was won by Mighty Be Forward Wanderers. We are currently working on the 2015 version . So why must Malawians, through the FAM Affiliates , elect you as the next FAM president? As President Barack Obama said when he visited the AU this year , we need change of leadership to bring in new insights and energies into our institutions and communities. Most significantly I have a vibrant energy towards society initiatives not only in football but many spheres, I am an ardent believer of and a devoted embracer and doer of everything to do with good corporate governance, I truly believe and walk transparency which has given me a great source of social capital and networks with all the key stakeholders in any business and social endeavours and I have demonstrated that I can use my social credits and capital to benefit football before. I will use that same capital to turn football into a vibrant , thriving and sustainable business that will benefit all the key stakeholders. What will be unique about Wilkins Mijiga, should he become FAM president? I will make FAM transparent by publishing its audited accounts every year, as a constitutional must, as champion the cause of ring fencing corporate governance by abolishing Life Presidency at FAM by advocating for term limits and empowering the affiliates to be meeting FAM as a governing council at least three times in a year so that the FAM Executive is held accountable to the people of Malawi for its actions. Most importantly I am exceptionally innovative and have an abundant knack of creativity and I do things with the utmost of perfection and I am poised, with the support of all the key stakeholders in football to take Malawian football to the top ten of within the next four years and the top five within the next ten years by doing what every intelligent sensible person does, building from the ground level with a strong foundation and not starting to build with the roof as is the case now where all we focus is the national team. No, I will make football vibrant from grass root football academies through active vibrant district and regional leagues and tiered age bracketed national squads right to the super League, which is already professionally ran and vibrant, to the national team. I will do the hard work of building from the bottom not the lazy easy way of just participating in every tournament even when we are not ready.

Wanderers fail to win again

Luka Bruno Milanzi’s equaliser on the spot kick in the second half gave Mighty Be Forward Wanderers a fully deserved point against Blue Eagles at Kamuzu Stadium. [caption id="attachment_96676" align="alignright" width="600"]Wanderers fail to win again Wanderers fail to win again[/caption] Elijah Kabingu looked to have sent the cops on a victory in the 26th minute when he put them ahead, Jabulani Linje having equalized a few minutes later. Wanderers were desolate but it would have been a real smash-and-grab if they were sharp upfront despite showing most of the ambition and moments of quality in a game high on drama but short on class. Mighty Wanderers supporters rose to acclaim their team's resilience at the final whistle, but they may actually feel disappointed not to claim all three points against Blue Eagles side that were desperately poor for long periods Their main business was to be contesting a top- eight place and trying to ensure they are in next season's Standard Bank Cup. Wanderers kept Kondwani Kumwenda in a central role, from where he caused havoc to the visitors, but it was the lively Muhammad Sulumba who had the best opportunities during a first half in which chances were in short supply. The Nomads had been much improved without carving, but the breakthrough finally came on half-time when Linje made space in the area before drilling home a low right-foot shot off the post. Sulumba would have given the Nomads a deserved lead at the break, but he lacked confidence and composure inside the box. Blue Eagles showed greater ruthlessness in front of goal in the second half but their strikers had tough time to pass through the likes of Boston Kabango and Wongani Kaipa. Elijah Kananji had introduced Ibrahim Sadick and Luka Milanzi to give the Nomads the cutting edge they lacked, and it needed an athletic save from John Soko to turn Sadick’s shot over the bar. Both teams tried to secure three points but to no avail.

Mimbulu just needed a victory of any margin last night to end the contest but that proved a tall order as Cougars came full force to win the second tie by 59-53 baskets and bring the final contest to the wire. Sponsors G.Y Imports and Exports, who are dealers in stationery, furniture, ICT equipment and building materials were well set to honour the champions last night but were made to wait until this (Sunday) evening when the two central giants clash in the last of the three-game series at the same venue. According to Cezoball general secretary Peter Gomani only the top four clubs in the 10-team Men Senior League made it to the final play-offs that saw the fourth-placed Mimbulu beating league leaders Central Knights in a best-of-three contest. Third-placed Cougars defeated second-placed ABC Lions to book a final date against the wild Mimbulu. The situation was different in the 10-team Women League, where league leaders Lady Clippers proved their superiority by beating fourth-placed Lady Dynamites. Second-placed Angels also won against third-placed ABC Lions to book a final date against Angels. The Angels were, however, too strong for Clippers during the final match, winning the first two matches of the three-game series to end the contest before the last game. For winning the Women League, Angels willtonight walk away with a trophy, gold medals and K200,000, courtesy of G.Y Imports and Exports. Winners of the Men Senior League are expected to receive a trophy, gold medals and K400,000 with League B champions Dream Team expected to cart home K200,000, a trophy and golf medals. The sponsors will also present K50,000 to each of the Most Valuable Players (MVPs) in the Men Senior and Women leagues.

The Flames were a better side as they   raided Sudan  goal several times through Chiukepo Msowoya and Schumaker Kuwali, but could not get their finishing act right. The Ernest Mtawali side had also a good defence marshalled by Stanely Sanudi, Miracle Gabeya, Yamikani Fodya and John Lanjesi. Malawi group also comprises South Sudan  and Djibout. George Chamangwana: Under fire by some sections of supporters

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) General Secretary Williams Banda has confirmed that his association will intervene and act as a mediator to end leadership wrangles that have engulfed the Mighty Be Forward Wanderers family. [caption id="attachment_63475" align="alignright" width="348"]George Chamangwana: Under fire by some sections of supporters George Chamangwana: Under fire by some sections of supporters[/caption] There have been disagreements between the team Executive Committee and a section of some supporters who now claim to have dissolved the club executive committee chaired by George Chamangwana as well as the main supporters committee. They claim to have appointed Chipiliro Mpinganjira to lead the new executive committee. The development comes as a result of the Nomads recent poor form. But Banda on Tuesday advised teams to always learn to give room for contact and dialogue. He therefore promised that his association will bring together the disgruntled Mighty Be Forward supporters and executive committee as soon as possible to map the way forward. According to Banda, the matter is being treated as urgent to ensure that they should not aggravate the situation at Nomads which he said can further affect the perfomance of the team. Meanwhile, one of Wanderers supporters who was tipped to lead the Nomads supporters family in the Central Region , Matthews Kimu Kamau has rejected his appointment describing it as illegal. "Much as I appreciate the confidence shown in me by Nomads supporters who believe I have the abilities to assist the team by holding such an important position, I feel the appointment is inappropriate and illegal" Kimu Kamau said in a statement. He therefore pleaded with all supporters to wait for team's annual general meeting slated for March 2016 to elect new office bearers. "The current executive committee was legally elected and must be voted out legally as well," said Kim Kamau. According to Kamau, the executive committee led by Chamangwana has done a great job by among other things landing a lucrative sponsorship deal from Be Forward Company. He therefore warned that internal wrangles might cost the team sponsorship the way it previously happened with Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL). "I am afraid that such quarrels within Wanderers family are giving the sponsors very bad publicity which may compromise the relationship. We should remember that the team lost sponsorship from MTL some five years ago partly due to the same in-house wrangles" warned Kimu Kamau. Sponsors, Japanese car dealers, Be Forward have said they are “monitoring the situation” at the Lali Lubani Road.

After sponsoring Championship play-offs for Northern Zone Basketball League (Nozobal) and Central Zone Basketball League (Cezobal) to a total tune of K2 million, Lilongwe based company- G.Y Imports and Exports says it is ready to sponsor all the three basketball zones as well as a national championship as long as there is a positive response from Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal), the zonal leagues and fans. Ladies MVP Rose Mkanda.[/caption] The commitment was made on Sunday evening by G.Y Imports and Exports managing director Griffin Kalua after presenting prizes to winners of Cezobal championships held over two weeks at Civo Basketball Court. Speaking after presenting the prizes, Kalua said his company was pleased to be associated with the development basketball in the country. “Basketball used to be very popular in the past but for some reasons the standards and popularity of the game went down. Depending on the response that we are going to get from Basmal, the zonal leagues and the fans, we are prepared to sponsor the three zones and at national level,” said Kalua, whose firm deals in stationery, ICT equipment, furniture and building materials. Chairperson for Cezobal Hellen Chabunya hailed G.Y Imports and Exports for coming to the rescue of Cezobal, which was running without sponsors. She expressed hope that the company would come full force to sponsor the league again next season. Chabunya urged basketball players, team officials and fans to maintain a high level of discipline to attract sponsors and make basketball a family sport, which people can watch with their families and friends. Cougars retained the Cezobal Senior League championship after overpowering Mimbulu in a best-of-three-series final contest played over three days at the Civo court. The championship, which was sponsored to the tune of K1.2 million involved all the three Cezobal leagues of Men Seniors, Women and League B. Defending champions Cougars and Mimbulu met in the final contest for the Men Senior League after concurring ABC Lions and Central Knights respectively in the championship play-offs played over a two-week period at the Civo court. Central Knights and ABC finished on top and second position, respectively in the 10-team league but were both knocked out by the two finalists in the championship preliminaries last week. Knights fell to fourth-placed Mimbilu with the Lions playing second fiddle to third-placed Cougars. Just like the preliminaries, the final was played on best-of-three series format that saw Mimbulu winning the first tie 58-40. But when everybody expected the experienced Mimbulu to finish off the contest during the second game played on Saturday night, the Cougars staged a dramatic fight back to beat their opponents by 59-51 baskets and take the final to the wire. During the third tie on Sunday evening, Cougars came from behind to beat Mimbulu 64-51 and reclaim the championship. Mimbulu led the Cougars by five baskets after the first two quarters but their inefficiency in front of goal cost them the game. Cougars, on the other hand proved strong in defence as well as on the counter and frustrated their opponents with three-point baskets, which the opponents tried to emulate but in vain. Cougars captain Takondwa Mengezi attributed the victory to mental strength and hard work on the part of his side with his counterpart Edgar Ng’ongola attributed the loss to change of tactics by his side during the second game. For winning the championship, Cougars received a trophy, gold medals and K400,000 from G.Y Imports and Exports. League B Champions Dream Team and Women champions Angels were presented with trophies, gold medals and K200,000 each by the sponsors. The sponsors also awarded Mimbulu’s power forward Mada Montana and Angels’ point guard Rose Mkanda with K50,000 cheques each for emerging the Most Valuable Players in their respective categories.

Champions Big Bullets have not only shown their supremacy in the TNM Super League, but also in Sapota Mapeto promotion as evidenced by the amount of revenue raised in the promotion. The People's Team has been dominating since the promotion was re-launched in June this year. Likewise, Wanderers have accumulatively generated over K4.4 million, followed by Lilongwe based side Silver Strikers with over K858,000. The promotion is open to all 15 clubs and the team's share is determined by the number of SMS sent in the particular month. During the first month of the promotion, the People's Team raised K1,474,445 from 39,023 SMSs, Wanderers raised K991,445 from 26,688 SMSs while Silver went away with K169,200 from 3,150 SMSs. In the second draw, the 2015 champions got over K2.7 million from 78,201 hits, Wanderers K1.429,298 from 40,837 hits and Silver Strikers got K236,819 from 6,766 hits The third draw saw Bullets FC pocketing K1,479,205 from 42,263 SMSs, Wanderers K796,425 from 22,755 SMSs with Silver Strikers walking away with K156,030 from 4,458 SMSs. The monthly cash prize of K200,000 went to owner of 0888331415. Effort to break the news to the subscriber proved futile as it could not be reached. TNM also splashed out 2500 and 5000 recharge vouchers, Flames replica jerseys and Y221 cell phones. Two fans who will register the highest SMS entries will receive Samsung 40 inch TVs. "We are yet to give out the K1.5 million, but Bullets are leading the pack and edging closer to 300,000 mark. They just need 72,000 SMSs. Its up to their officials to encourage their followers to send as many SMSs as possible to the hit the mark. "Likewise, Wanderers can as well do better by engaging extra gear. There is more draw to be conducted likely on 31 December 2015. Fans should take advantage of the remaining month to send as many sms as possible," said Limbani Nsapato, TNM Sponsorship and Public Relations Manager.

Yabwanya: Wins appeal, to stand

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) electoral appeals committee has overturned the ruling of Electoral Committee which disqualified one of the presidential candidates Willy Yabwanya Phiri based in Canada on the basis of residence. [caption id="attachment_98534" align="alignright" width="600"]Yabwanya: Wins appeal, to stand Yabwanya: Wins appeal, to stand[/caption] [caption id="attachment_97446" align="alignright" width="484"]Mijiga: Cleared for FAM president polls Mijiga: Cleared for FAM president polls[/caption] [caption id="attachment_96421" align="alignright" width="556"]Nyamilandu: Incumbent to face two challengers Nyamilandu: Incumbent to face two challengers[/caption] Yabwanya, who was disqualified along with several others, appealed to FAM appeals committee against his disqualification saying he is eligible to stand as his stay in Canada is temporary as such he was legitimate Malawian to stand for the presidency Lawyer John Gift Mwakhwawa representing Yabwanya also argued during the hearing that the word “residence” doesn't mean permanent residence and in the book of law one can be a resident of different place like Zambia, South Africa and Tanzania but still remains in Malawi as his residence doesn't mean he is not a Malawian but he is there temporary. Mwakhwawa also gave example of United Nations representative to other countries in Africa who he said can be UN residence representative for Malawi and Zambia at the same time but he is not a permanent resident In their ruling the Appeals committee which is chaired by Supreme Court of Appeal Judge Lovemore Chikopa and lawyers George Bakuwa and Patrice Nkhono ruled in favour of Yabwanya that he is eligible to stand as FAM president against incumbent Walter Nyamilundu who seeksa fourth term. In other Appeal cases, Fam executive member James Mwenda who is vying for Fam vice presidency has been cleared to stand on vice president position after his candidature eligibility was challenged by his strongest contender Tiyanjane Somba Banda who is Super League of Malawi treasure. Somba through his lawyer Mwakhwawa challenged Mwenda's eligibility as he claimed he didn’t meet the minimum requirement of MSCE certificate as he only submitted his Diploma. The Appeals committee ruled that Mwenda is eligible to stand as what he submitted was above the minimum requirement as such he was eligible to stand on the vice presidency position Somba Banda said he respect the ruling as he was not against Mwenda personally but he wanted it to be on record for future reference on the same matter. "I respect the decision of the appeals committee as it has made it clear that one can be a FAM executive member even without having an MSCE. Though the likes of Sammys were penalised before using the same article, we therefore need to rephrase the article so that people should not abuse it for selective justice", Somba Banda said. On his part Mwenda who welcomed the ruling happily as it has put to rest all talks on his eligibility and said it's all for the good of the game. Meanwhile, the committee has also ruled in favour of Hubert Mfune appeal against his disqualification on the basis that he didn't submit his MSCE as Mfune through his lawyer David Kanyenda argued that they did produce MSCE and its secretariat negligence and careless that lost the copy and during the hearing they did produce their original certificate copy. The committee has maintained the disqualification of current FAM executive member Paul Mzungu who was disqualified on the basis that he did not submit his copy of profile explaining his football. The Committee also threw away an application by other interested parties against presidential aspirant Wilkins Mijiga eligibility as the committee says they lacked proper backing and procedure of Appeal. Former Bullets officials George Innocent Kapachika and Ophman Kondowe challenged Mijiga's claim that he was once a trustees of Big Bullets football club, saying it is not true he served as a trustee of the Bullets. The two were being represented by Collins Chitsime who was standing in for Kondwani Jawati who was not present during the hearing. Mijiga, a renowned marketer, inserted the claim in his profile to prove that he has been in association football for more than five years as demanded by FAM statutes. The committee dismissed the application saying it lack basis and proper explanation on who are the trustees of the team and if they are registered trustee at the registrar general. FAM goes to the polls on December 12 in Salima.

Gerald Phiri Jnr pscored for Malawi

Malawi national team, the Flames, looked to be heading back to their best as they stunned Djibout to book a place in the quarter finals of the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup  in Ethiopia at Bahir Dar stadium. [caption id="attachment_88378" align="alignright" width="600"]Gerald Phiri Jnr pscored for Malawi Gerald Phiri Jnr scored for Malawi[/caption] Gerald Phiri  scored for the Flames  in the 30th minute on a spot kick, before John Banda  made it 2-0 five minutes later in a match which saw Schumaker Kuwali being shown marching orders. On the 75th minute, captain Chiukepo Msowoya sealed the victory, which consequently eliminated Djibouti from the tournament. The Flames began the tournament on a brilliant note beating Sudan Falcons 2-1 on Monday and victory against a side that lost 2-0 to South Sudan has seen them go to six points and a berth in the last eight secured. They will now play South Sudan in their last Group C encounter on Friday  on academic purposes – perhaps to seek Group winner. The Flames  dominated play in the entire  but missed key opportunities. In Wednesday’s encounter, coach Ernest Mtawali did not make changes to the previous squad that played Sudan. Mtawali started the same line-up that faced Sudan with youthful Miracle Gabeya and John Lanjesi paired in central defence to shield goalkeeper Simplex Nthala while Yamikani Fodya and Stanley Sanudi operated as left-back and right-back respectively. John Banda, Phiri, Chimango Kayira and Dalitso Sailesi retained their midfield roles while Msowoya and Kuwali teamed upfront.
