Coach Ernest Mtawali has called up Mighty Be Forward Wanderers striker Jabulani Linje and Civo United man of the moment Nelson Kangunje into Flames squad for the very first time in both players' careers. [caption id="attachment_95385" align="alignright" width="463"]Mtawali calls up 27 players Malawi media -Photo Jeromy Kadewere Mtawali calls up 27 players  -Photo Jeromy Kadewere[/caption] The Malawi National Football team, the Flames will go into camp on Monday at the Chiwembe Technical Centre in Blantyre in preparation for the 2015 Cecafa Cup to be played between November 21 and December 6. Mtawali has called a 27-man squad that includes Mozambique based Simplex Nthala, Chimango Kayira and Chawanangwa Kaonga as well as Gerald Phiri Junior who is yet to start playing for South African Premier Soccer League side Bidvest as he waits for a work permit. But there is not room for Desportivo De Maputo striker Zicco Mkanda who inspired his club to a cup triumph. There is also no room for beleaguered Robert Ng’ambi of PSL’s Platinum Stars who had fallen out with Mtawali after undermining his decision to use him as a substitute in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Swaziland. Bloemfontein Celtic’s Gadinho Mhango is also out of the picture as veterans Joseph Kamwendo, Esau Kanyenda and Harry Nyirenda have also been overlooked. The development comes barely two days after CECAFA accepted Football Association of Malawi’s request to be considered for the competition as guest. The Flames will travel to Ethiopia as guests participants to the 11-member competition. Some of the countries to take part during this tournament include Uganda, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibout, Burundi, Somalia, Rwanda, Sudan and Tanzania The rest of the players are local based and below is the full squad: GOALKEEPERS 1. Walter Nyamilandu: FAM outgooing president applying every available tactic to hold on to seat

Beleaguered Football Association of Malawi (FAM) outgoing president Mac Millan Walter Nyamilandu Manda is doing everything possible to retain his seat for the fourth time during the December 12 polls by even planning to bribe presiding officers and policemen, Nyasa Times can reveal. [caption id="attachment_42740" align="alignright" width="600"]Walter Nyamilandu: FAM outgooing president applying every available tactic to hold on to seat Walter Nyamilandu: FAM outgooing president applying every available tactic to hold on to seat[/caption] Nyamilandu met FAM Secretary General Suzgo Nyirenda and FAM member James Mwenda in Salima on Saturday where the plan was hatched. There was a beach tournament at Livingstonia Beach in Salima at the weekend and the trio disguised the event for their meeting. But when Nyasa Times reporters noticed that the three were nowhere near the event, they, like in a an undercover style, secretly followed the three who were holed up in Nyamilandu’s room 216 at Sunbird Livingstonia Beach Resort. We saw Nyirenda, clad in his red Flames Replica jersey embodied ‘Malawi’ at the back, carrying Nyamilandu’s bags from his dark grey Toyota Fortuner registration number NB 4411 while Mwenda who was putting on a green Flames replica jersey and Nyamilandu in a black and gold stripped FIFA addidas golf-shirt followed on. When Nyasa Times reporter secretly positioned himself near the room, it was shocking to learn that the three were planning on rigging the vote using underhand tactics. “We can just pay the presiding officers and even the police officers on the day so that they help us. How much do you think we can pay them?” asked Nyamilandu in his high-pitched-horse voice. “I think K200,000 to K300,000 would be enough,” suggested his ‘errand boy’ Nyirenda. Our plan to listen in and record the whole conversation was botched when our reporter’s phone rung suddenly and this disturbed the trio who stopped talking and Mwenda went outside the room to check what was happening. Fortunately our reporter managed to duck and perched himself at a place where he could see room 216 but was not within earshot of their clandestine plans. They stayed in the room for close to three hours with Walter coming in and out to attend to various phone calls. Mwenda drove back to Lilongwe after the meeting while Nyamilandu spent the night in room 216 and Nyirenda was allocated another room within the Resort. Insiders also revealed that the police officers who will be paid by the Nyamilandu camp will be used to intimidate supporters of other candidates by accusing them of flimsy charges like being drunk and will be thrown out of the voting hall. Our sources close to Nyamilandu also revealed that he has put aside a whopping K45 million for the campaign ‘because he has a lot to lose if he does not retain the seat’. Insiders also said Nyamilandu has managed to ‘silence’ prominent local journalists in the country especially at the two national newspapers, The Nation and The Daily Times as no one dares to report on various financial scandals that have hit FAM in recent years.

People think sports are only football, netball, boxing and among others. But this is not like that ecause this sport is also fascinating,” he said. “Currently I am training at Emcee Gym and Fitness Centre, owned by Muhamad Ajusa in Mangochi who is also my promoter. Therefore, I will use this opportunity to invest my time and energy in this sport to groom young ones who have the passion for it,” stressed Gondwe who also said he will retain the title next year. He further explained that he will use his title to influence the youth in the district especially girls to continue with their education, saying even sports require educated people.

NELSON KANGUNJE

Malawi's veteran soccer analyst Charles Nyirenda has nicknamed man of the moment, Civo United attacker Nelson Kangunje as 'Silencer'. [caption id="attachment_97671" align="alignright" width="434"]Silencer: Kangunje Silencer: Kangunje[/caption] Nyirenda made the declaration inside Zodiak radio's TNM Soccer Show on Monday saying it is an honour to Kangunje for his excellent scoring form of vital goals. Kangunje has this season scored a couple of heart broken goals including the loan goal that won his side the Standard Bank Cup against Mighty Be Forward Wanderers two weeks ago. According to Nyirenda, Kangunje has scored goals that have silenced several team hence the idea of coming up with the nick name. Nyirenda who has been in football circles for over four decades and once served as Fam Chief Executive Officer (CEO) also claimed to be the one who nick named former Flames legend Patrick Mabedi as 'General'. Nyirenda said Mabedi was given the name because of his excellent commands and orders while in the field of play. Lately, most Malawian players have been given names of players who play in foreign leagues including English Barclays Premier League a development which has received heavy criticism from soccer commentators.

Kalua (middle) presents the trophy and cheque to Nkhulande

After almost seven years of basketball sponsorship drought, the Northern Zone Basketball League (Nozoball) can now afford a smile with the commitment from G.Y Imports and Exports- the suppliers of ICT equipment, stationery, furniture and sanitaries that they will continue sponsoring basketball in the region. [caption id="attachment_97754" align="alignright" width="600"]Kalua (middle) presents the trophy and cheque to Nkhulande Kalua (middle) presents the trophy and cheque to Nkhulande[/caption] [caption id="attachment_97755" align="alignright" width="600"]Kalua (middle) presents the trophy and cheque to Nkhulande Kalua (middle) presents the trophy and cheque to Nkhulande[/caption] [caption id="attachment_97752" align="alignright" width="600"]Pledged continued sponsorship- Kalua Pledged continued sponsorship- Kalua[/caption] Managing director of G.Y Imports and Exports Griffin Kalua made the commitment during the prize presentation for the K800,000 G.Y Imports and Exports Nozoball Championship, whose finals were played over the weekend at Katoto Basketball Court in the northern city of Mzuzu. “We are happy with the way Nozoball has welcomed the sponsorship, the organisation and discipline amongst players and are definitely coming back in a bigger way. "As a company, our aim is to help in revamping basketball, which used to be second to football while at the same time expressing appreciation for the support we get from basketball players and all our customers,” said Kalua. Nozoball chairman Vilanji Nkhwazi was all thanks to G.Y Imports and Exports for coming to the league’s rescue. “I thank God for what has happened. To others, it might look simple thing but considering the state of our country’s economy, this is a big contribution towards the development of basketball here in the north and in Malawi as a whole. "With the coming in of G.Y Imports and Exports, we expect the teams that disbanded due to lack of sponsorship to be resuscitated," said Nkhwazi. The Nozoball chair said players from the region had been playing basketball for the love of the sport and that the coming in of G.Y was a big motivation to the players. Playing in the finals were Nkhulande and Moyale, who reached the final stage after triumphing in a mini-tournament involving top four teams from the Nozoball league. The league had five teams- Nkhulande, Moyale, Piston, Ekwendeni and Mzuzu University. Nkhulande, who were top in the league booked their final berth after beating third-placed Pistons while league runners-up Moyale reached the final after defeating fourth-placed Ekwendeni. All the games were played on best-of-three format, in which winner of two out of three matches played between two teams went through. The Nkhulande, Moyale final was also decided by a best-of-three contest which started Friday afternoon and finished on Sunday. During the first game on Friday, Nkhulande defeated Moyale by 58 baskets against 50. Nkhulande repeated victory over Moyale on Sunday beating the soldiers 61-43 in the second contest to emerge champions before the last play-off. They were presented with K300,000, a trophy, two basketballs and gold medals right after winning the second match. The third tie was reduced to a formality affair, in which some Moyale players featured for Nkhulande with some Nkhulande players playing for Moyale. Captain for Nkhulande Chimwemwe Chirwa expressed excitement with the victory, saying hard work had paid for his team. “We have been training Monday to Friday even before we knew about the sponsorship and today is a happy day for us because we have got a reward for our hard work. This sponsorship is a big motivation to us and we are going to work even harder,” said Chirwa. [caption id="attachment_97753" align="alignright" width="356"]A female rapper entertains the crowd during the final A female rapper entertains the crowd during the final[/caption] Apart from the team prizes, the sponsors also presented K50,000 to Nkhulande player Patrick Chirwa for emerging Most Valuable Player (MVP). There was also a Slam Dunk and Three-point shooting competition, which saw Nkhulande’s Peter Simfukwe walking away with K10,000 as the best dunker and Paul Monjeza of Pistons receiving a similar amount after winning the Three-point shooting contest. The final was spiced up by a friendly match between Pistons and Lilongwe based Brave Hearts, which the Mzuzu side won 45-44. Recently G.Y Imports and Exports sponsored an All Star National Basketball Championship involving the three basketball zones of Southern Zone Basketball League, Central Zone Basketball League and Nozoball to the tune of K3 million.

The blues midfield didn’t offer enough protection from the impressive midfield play of their opponents. Maganizo receive Man of the match award

Forward Precious Msosa's 6th minute goal was enough for TNM Super League log table anchors FISD Wizards to collect much needed three points over Kamuzu Barracks at Kalulu stadium in Nchalo, Chikwawa on Saturday. [caption id="attachment_97905" align="alignright" width="700"]Maganizo receive Man of the match award Maganizo receive Man of the match award[/caption] [caption id="attachment_94419" align="alignright" width="343"]Mponda: We can surivive relagation Mponda: We can surivive relagation[/caption] [caption id="attachment_97904" align="alignright" width="700"]Maganizo receive Man of the match award Maganizo receive Man of the match award[/caption] The goal also enabled the side, formerly Surestream FC, to register its third win in the TNM Super League. Playing before a sizable crowd, the host blending a pool of up and coming players in the likes of their captain Levison Maganizo, Enerst Tambe, Mike Mkwate, Precious Msosa, Hendrix Misinde and Azeru Joseph were a marvel to watch and knocked at Kamuzu Barracks' goal just a few seconds after the first whistle. And their effort to grab an early goal was rewarded in the 6th minute when Msosa hit the back of the net after the visitor's goalkeeper Amadu Ali failed to catch Tambe' thunderbolt. Well positioned Msosa collected a rebound and released a shot in the penalty box that left the goalkeeper helpless. The goal added more life to their game and it was a surprise when they were given a penalty half way in the first, but their forward Henry Chimaimba shot straight into the palms Kamuzu Barracks goalkeeper. Amadu's superb catch brought hope back into the Lilongwe based soldiers and started playing with purpose. Kamuzu Barracks created an number of scoring opportunities, but failed to utilize them with forwards Harvey Mkacha and Mannaseh Chiyesa and Diouf Simaone being the major culprits. Simaone hurt further his teammates in 42nd minute when he shot wide with FISD Wizards goalkeeper already beaten. The second half was a balanced affair with the soldiers advancing in numbers to grab the equalizer. But too many fouls on part of the soldiers derailed their efforts. FISD Wizard captain Levison Maganizo was also voted man of the match. And despite the win, the rookies, who are yet to register a win in away assignments, are still perched on the bottom of table with 18 points from 22 games. They have been anchoring the log since the league kicked off in May this year. FISD Wizard coach Peter Mponda said his charges will fight and work tooth and nail to remain in the K90 million top flight league. Mponda expressed optimism that his side will remain in the league and that his charges will work tirelessly in the remaining fixtures. "We have a number of games to play and the boys know the importance of each game. They will engage extra gear to do well in our next assignments. "We can turn the tables and jump out of the relegation zone. The boys are determined to collect the much needed points," said Mponda. While his counterpart Kenwood Nkhoma conceded defeat and promised to workout their weaknesses in their next assignment against league leaders Bullets FC on Sunday at Kamuzu stadium. "Sunday's game is equally important and tough. We will rectify areas we did not do well today and they boys will no allow to drop more points," Nkhoma.

Gerald Nkungula made it 2-0 on 77 minutes with a long range strike from an angle before the Lions pulled one back through Innocent Bokosi’s spot kick. Raphael Phiri dashed the Lions’ hopes of a come-back in the 86th minute when he rose high to head in Nkungula’s corner kick. The striker completed the damage on the dot of regulation time in almost a similar fashion after heading home a corner kick by Richard Chande. Lions’ caretaker coach Pritchard Mwanza conceded defeat, apportioning the blame on his goalkeeper and defence. “There was poor communication between our goalkeeper and the defence and we will try to rectify this problem before meeting Silver Strikers tomorrow (Sunday, November 15, 2015). This will be another tough game but we will try our level best to get the three points,” said Mwanza, who has just taken over as head coach from fired Collins Nkuna. His counterpart Oscar Kaunda praised his charges for following instructions. “I am happy with the boys. They played according to instructions and if we continue like this, we will meet our target of finishing in the top six,” said Kaunda. In another result, Dedza Young Soccer surprised Blue Eagles 1-0 at Dedza Stadium.

Big Bullets  - sponsored by Nyasa Manufacturing Company - are still head and shoulders clear of the rest in the TNM Super League and they moved to the brink of claiming back-to-back titles on Sunday after they displayed classic soccer to beat gutsy Kamuzu Barracks 2-0 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre. [caption id="attachment_97978" align="alignright" width="600"]Harvey Mkacha's shot...Photo Jeromy Kadewere Harvey Mkacha's shot...Photo Jeromy Kadewere[/caption] [caption id="attachment_97977" align="alignright" width="600"]Chikondi Likwemba celebrating a goal...Photo Jeromy Kadewere Chikondi Likwemba celebrating a goal...Photo Jeromy Kadewere[/caption] [caption id="attachment_97976" align="alignright" width="600"]Another bad day for KB in office...Photo Jeromy Kadewere KB  suffer another loss..Photo Jeromy Kadewere[/caption] [caption id="attachment_97979" align="alignright" width="600"]The title has been put to bed, Peoples Team fans celebrate...Photo Jeromy Kadewere The title has been put to bed, Peoples Team fans celebrate...Photo Jeromy Kadewere[/caption] The bankers drew 1-1 against Red Lions, as the Area 30 cops were beaten 1-0 to Epac FC. The Peoples Team are 14 points clear of second place Mafco FC with just five games left. Bullets Sunday win ensured they have put the title to bed. And  they are hard to oppose in this campaign. The Nyasa Bullets just need a point to be officially crowned champions. Chikondi Likwemba and Jaffalie Chande scored Bullets goals after disciplined Kamuzu Barracks failed to tame the champions in the first half, where they misused a lot of scoring opportunities. The soldiers were denied a goal in the first half when Harvey Mkacha’s powerful header was cleared on the line by Macpharen Ngwira. Manase Chiyesa also missed a scoring chance after a well curved cross from the left flank. Kamuzu Barracks matched Bulletsin the first 45 minutes but lacked the killer punch upfront. Another weakness area for Kamuzu Barracks was on the midfield, where Harvey Mkacha was outplayed by the likes of James Chilapondwa. Chiukepo Msowoya started for Bullets along with Mussa Manyenje but he was pulled off after sustaining an injury to pave the way for Dave Ng’ambi. In the second half, the champions began well, snapping at their sloppy visitors who were not allowed to settle with Dalitso Sailesi pulling the strings. Sailesi created a fine opening for Mussa with a glorious pass on 55 minutes, only for the striker's touch to let him down. Jaffalie Chande then failed to connect with Yamikani Fodya’s cross as Bullets threatened before Macpharen Ngwira’s excellent pass unlocked the soldiers , only for his cross to be hacked clear. While the visitors pressed they rarely looked like making a breakthrough against the organized hosts defence, which was well marshalled by Sankhani Mkandawire. Manase Chiyesa fired over in the 59th minute and Bullets then survived a huge scare moments later. In the 68th minute, Mkacha headed the ball back for Chiyesa, whose goalbound shot was blocked. But it was Chikondi Likwemba, who send the home fans into raptures as he connected a Yamikani Fodya’s free kick before Jaffalie Chande’s header to make it 2-0. Kamuzu Barracks had been controlled at the back but allowed Macpharen Ngwira to squeeze down the right and cross for Pilirani Zonda to sweep in from 10 yards. Bullets had upped their game and Sailesi flashed a shot wide after 70th minute as Kamuzu Barracks struggled to match their second -half tempo. Its just matter of formality for Bullets to finish the remaining games to be crowned champions but in reality they are again the soccer kings of Malawi for second year running.

Yabwanya: Considers an appeal

Disqualified Football Association of Malawi (FAM) presidential candidate Willie Yabwanya Phiri said he would be appealing against a decision by the football body's electoral committee to disqualify him, saying he is in Canada temporarily and would be heading back to Malawi at the end of this month. [caption id="attachment_98011" align="alignright" width="200"]Yabwanya: Considers an appeal Yabwanya: Considers an appeal[/caption] FAM electoral committee disqualified Yabwanya Phiri, sponsor of Karonga United, because he does not reside in Malawi which they say is against FAM rules. The committee also disqualified Paul Mzungu and Hubert Mfune because of their failure to submit necessary documents like their personal details and copies of their academic qualifications, leaving the race between incumbent Walter Nyamilandu and Wilkins Mijiga, a senior manager at National Bank of Malawi. "They based their decision on what they think not based on facts," said Yabwanya Phiri. He said his house is in Karonga so too his family. But chairperson of the electoral committee Judge Dingiswayo Madise said the FAM Constitution clearly stipulates that a candidate should be based in Malawi. "We applied what is stipulated for instance the Constitution says a candidate must be above 30 years old, must have MSCE, must not have been involved in crime bordering on dishonesty within the last seven years and must be a resident of Malawi. It does not say one should be sponsoring a fooball club, it does not say one must have a house in Malawi but one must be on the ground during nominations, you must be in Malawi during the scrutinising process," said Madise.

Chomanika: Life goes on

Chikwawa United owner Owen Chomanika failed to win the hearts of Football Association of Malawi (FAM) affiliates for nomination after reportedly failed to palm-oil some of the members who were invited for a meeting. [caption id="attachment_91314" align="alignright" width="425"]Chomanika: Life goes on Chomanika: Life goes on[/caption] Inside sources said Chomanika invited some members of affiliates to sell his manifesto and convince them to nominate him. But the members were disgruntled after he failed to refund them  expenses they incurred to come for the meeting. The source said they expected to be refunded heir money on transport and accommodation but he only gave them K5,000. “How do u expect people to nominate him as they only received just K5,000 and yet some of them came all the way from the Northern Region,” said the source. “If one wants to stand for such elections they must be prepared to spend for campaign,”  he said. Chomanika once said that he was shocked but not bitter that he failed to secure a nomination from any of the nine affiliates of FAM ahead of the elections scheduled for December 12. “I offered myself but the affiliates have not nominated me. This is a small matter for me Life has to continue,” Chomanika said. So far incumbent Walter Nya milandu and marketer Wilkins  Mijiga are set to face off in the Presidential Elections after the other candidate who was nominated to run for the President, Willie Yabwana was disqualified.
